Sculptural
Basketry - Basketry |
Each piece begins by creating a hand sculpted wood form
that suggests the shape for the sculptural vessel. This
unique wood shape allows the artist to create a sense
of movement within each individual basket. It is a blending
of architecture, imagination, control and freedom. Exotic
and domestic hardwoods, each with their own natural richness
of colour and striking grain character, provide the colour
pallet for each form. The artist achieves the range of
colour in the reed through a hand dying process. Natural
and dyed reeds are combined with other materials such
as sea grass and cedar root to create and enhance the
woven designs.

My experience as a smith covers a cross section of this
craft ranging from interior hardware such as fireplace
tools and accessories, pot racks, clothing hooks, towel
racks and candle holders. Outside items include door hardware,
gates and railings, horse cart and buggy hardware and
shop tools and equipment. I prefer to work with the age
old traditional tools of coal forge,anvil and hammer.
I also use the old traditional techniques of chiseling,
riviting,collaring, and fullering.
